This is the question we hear most before implant consultations. The short answer: no, the surgery itself is not painful — and the recovery is far less uncomfortable than most people expect. Here's exactly what happens.
During the Procedure: What You'll Actually Feel
Implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic. The area is fully numb before any drilling begins. You may feel pressure or vibration — sensations of touch and movement — but not pain. Most patients are genuinely surprised at how comfortable the procedure is.
For anxious patients, we offer conscious sedation (oral sedation or IV sedation). You remain awake but deeply relaxed and often have little memory of the procedure afterward.
A single implant placement typically takes 30–60 minutes. Bone augmentation, if required, adds time and is done in the same session where possible.
After the Surgery: The First 72 Hours
Once the anaesthetic wears off, 4–6 hours after surgery, you may experience:
- Mild to moderate aching at the implant site — manageable with standard over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen
- Swelling of the gum and surrounding area — peaks at day 2–3, then subsides
- Minor bleeding for the first few hours — normal and expected
The vast majority of our patients report needing only 1–2 days of pain relief medication. Most describe the discomfort as similar to, or less than, a tooth extraction.
The Healing Phase: Osseointegration
After placement, the titanium implant needs 3–6 months to fuse with the jawbone — a process called osseointegration. During this time, you feel nothing. The bone is healing around the implant silently. You'll have a temporary crown or healing cap in place so the gap is never visible.
When Does the Final Crown Go On?
Once the implant has fully integrated, the permanent ceramic crown is attached. This is completely painless — no drilling, no anaesthetic needed. The crown is screwed or cemented onto an abutment that connects to the implant. At this point, your new tooth is complete.
Who Is Not a Good Candidate?
Implants require sufficient jawbone volume and good general health. Uncontrolled diabetes, active cancer treatment, heavy smoking, and certain medications affecting bone density can affect outcomes. A thorough assessment including 3D CBCT scan is done before any treatment to confirm suitability.
Implants in Kosovo vs. UK — The Cost Reality
A single implant including placement, abutment, and ceramic crown costs €900–€1,400 at our clinic, versus £2,500–£3,500 in the UK. For patients needing multiple implants, the savings are substantial. See our dental tourism page for how the travel works.
