Porcelain veneers are one of the most transformative treatments in modern cosmetic dentistry. In a single week, they can change the shape, colour, size, and alignment of your teeth — giving you a smile that looks completely natural but dramatically better. If you've ever wondered whether veneers are right for you, this guide covers everything.

What Exactly Are Dental Veneers?

A dental veneer is a thin shell of porcelain — typically 0.3 to 0.7 millimetres thick — that is permanently bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Think of it like a very precisely crafted cover that replaces the visible face of each tooth.

Veneers are used to correct:

Porcelain vs. Composite Veneers — What's the Difference?

There are two main types of veneers. Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental lab from pressed ceramic. They are highly translucent (mimicking natural enamel), stain-resistant, and extremely durable. They typically last 12–20 years with proper care.

Composite veneers are made from tooth-coloured resin and are applied and sculpted directly onto the tooth in one appointment. They cost less, but are more prone to staining and typically last 5–8 years before needing replacement or repair.

At Dr. Cem Smile Design, we work primarily with premium porcelain from Ivoclar and Vita — the same materials used by top clinics in London, Vienna, and New York.

The Veneer Procedure: Step by Step

1. Digital Smile Design Consultation

Before any preparation, we photograph your teeth and face, and use digital smile design software to show you a photorealistic preview of your result. You can request adjustments — longer, shorter, brighter, more natural — until the design is exactly what you want.

2. Tooth Preparation

A very thin layer of enamel (0.3–0.7mm) is removed from the front of each tooth to make room for the veneer. This is done under local anaesthetic — you'll feel no discomfort. Temporary veneers are placed immediately, so you leave looking great even while your permanent veneers are being made.

3. Lab Fabrication

Your veneers are hand-crafted in our partner laboratory to exactly match the approved digital design. This typically takes 3–5 working days.

4. Bonding

The temporary veneers are removed, and each permanent veneer is bonded to your tooth using a specialised dental cement activated by UV light. The fit, colour, and bite are checked carefully before final bonding. The result is immediate.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

With proper care, porcelain veneers last 12–20 years. The most important factors are: avoiding biting hard objects directly (ice, pen caps), wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene. Veneers themselves don't decay, but the underlying tooth can, so regular checkups remain essential.

How Much Do Veneers Cost at Dr. Cem?

Our porcelain veneers range from €350 to €500 per tooth — compared to £800–£1,200 per tooth in the UK. A full smile makeover with 10 veneers, which might cost £10,000–£14,000 in London, typically ranges from €3,500–€6,000 at our clinic in Kosovo. See our full pricing page for details.

Are Veneers Right for You?

Veneers are ideal if you want a dramatic, long-lasting result and your teeth and gums are in good health. They are not suitable if you have active gum disease, heavily decayed teeth that need crowns, or if you grind severely without a night guard.
