Traditional dental impressions — the trays of thick, goopy material you bite into — have been used for decades to create moulds of teeth. At Dr. Cem Smile Design, we've replaced them entirely with intraoral 3D digital scanning technology, making treatment planning faster, more comfortable, and more precise than ever before.
What Is Intraoral 3D Scanning?
An intraoral scanner is a small, wand-like device that captures thousands of micro-images per second as it moves around your mouth. These images are processed in real time to create a precise, full-colour 3D digital model of your teeth, gums, and bite — all in a matter of minutes.
The result is a perfectly accurate digital impression that can be sent instantly to a dental lab, loaded into smile design software, or used to 3D-print models and surgical guides.
How It Works at Our Clinic
During your appointment, a dental assistant gently moves the scanner wand around your teeth. You'll see your own 3D model building in real time on the screen beside you. The scan takes approximately 3–5 minutes per arch. There is no discomfort, no gagging, and nothing to bite down on.
The completed scan is reviewed immediately by Dr. Cem. If any area needs rescanning, it's done on the spot — ensuring a perfect digital impression before you leave the chair.
Why 3D Scanning Is Better Than Traditional Impressions
- No gagging or discomfort — particularly important for patients with a sensitive gag reflex
- Greater accuracy — digital scans capture detail at the micron level, reducing fitting errors in crowns, veneers, and aligners
- Instant digital workflow — scans are transmitted to the lab immediately, reducing turnaround time
- Permanent record — your 3D model is stored digitally, available for comparison at every future visit
- Eco-friendly — eliminates plaster models, impression material waste, and courier shipping
Which Treatments Benefit From 3D Scanning?
Virtually every treatment at our clinic uses digital scanning at some stage:
- Porcelain veneers — scans guide the digital smile design and lab fabrication
- Dental implants — combined with CBCT X-ray for precise surgical guide production
- Invisalign & aligners — the entire aligner series is fabricated from a single digital scan
- Crowns & bridges — scans feed directly into CEREC same-day milling
- Smile design — digital models allow photorealistic previews of your result before any treatment begins
The Technology We Use
Dr. Cem Smile Design uses a professional-grade intraoral scanner trusted by leading cosmetic dental practices across Europe. The system integrates directly with our digital smile design software and our CEREC milling unit, creating a seamless digital workflow from scan to finished restoration.
